Frequently Asked Questions

What are “Gently Haunted Tours?”

Gently Haunted Tours are ghost walks and pub crawls hosted by DeLand’s Haunted Antique Shop. They’re based on stories from our new book, Gently Haunted: True Stories from the Haunted Antique Shop.

What tours do you offer?

We offer two tours: a family-friendly ghost walk suitable for all ages, and a pub crawl for adults age 21 and older.

What’s the difference between the two tours?

The tours are basically same, but the pub crawl takes longer because we stop at bars and pubs along the way. At each stop, you’ll be free to enjoy beer, wine, or spirits. You may also purchase non-alcoholic beverages during the pub crawl.

Please note that we neither encourage nor discourage the consumption of alcohol on our tours, and that transactions at bars and pubs take place independently of the tour’s owners and operators.

Will we get to see ghosts on the tour?

We’ll try! We’ll certainly invite them to join us. Ghosts often come forward when we call their names and talk about their lives.

How much do the tours cost?

Ticket prices range from $10 to $75. Infants and preschoolers in strollers and wagons can tag along for free. Click here for our current schedule and prices.

Is the cost of drinks included in the pub crawl?

No, you’ll pay for your own drinks.

How far will we walk?

Over the course of the evening, we’ll walk about 1.3 miles, or 13 blocks, with 13 stops along the way.

How long is each tour?

The ghost walk takes 60 to 90 minutes. The pub crawl is about two hours.

How physically fit should I be to enjoy your tours?

While everyone has different ideas about what makes a walk challenging or not, we would describe our tours as leisurely strolls. Our pace is slow, with frequent stops, and there are no hills or inclines to speak of. We stay on city sidewalks and cross public streets at marked intersections.

Our tours are accessible, and you’re welcome to join us if you use a wheelchair or mobility aid.

A note about health and safety:

By purchasing tickets to our tours, you certify that you and other members of your party are in good health and suffer from no physical or mental condition that would make you especially susceptible to injury or disability.

By any measure, walking tours of DeLand involve minimal risk. Even so, you must agree to these terms in order to buy tickets and participate in our tours.

Will the tours frighten my children?

We think our tours are spooky, not scary. We do talk about ghosts, of course. We’ll also see the spot where a convicted murderer was hanged in public, in front of schoolchildren. If your children might be troubled by imagining themselves in that scenario, you can step away briefly during that stop on the tour.

What should I bring?

Bring a fully charged cellphone or iPad with internet access, so you can access our secret stash of facts and photos during the tour. You can take photos with your phone, or bring a regular camera. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. If you have infants or small children in your party, bring their strollers or wagons.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes. If your dog is leashed, well-behaved, and not afraid of ghosts, he can come. Depending on the size of the group, we may ask you and your pet to tail behind the rest of us.

Where can I buy tickets?

You can buy tickets here. You can choose to print your ticket at home or keep it on your cell phone. We’ll also have your name on a list when you check in for your tour.

Who leads your Deaf-friendly tours?

Our tour guide Emily is a talented sign-language interpreter who works with students in Volusia County Schools. She’s fluent in American Sign Language. She has a theater background, so her ASL tours are fun for hearing people, too.

If you are Deaf or hard of hearing and you can’t make one of our ASL tours, please let us know in advance and we will lend you a copy of our script to use during the tour.

If you have Deaf friends or family members, please tell them about our tours!

Should I tip my tour guide?

Yes. If you enjoy our tours (and we think you will), tips are the perfect way to show your appreciation to our hard-working guides.

Where do the tours start?

All of our tours start and end across the street from DeLand’s Athens Theatre, at the northeast corner of Florida Avenue and Indiana Avenue. Click here for directions.

What time do the tours start?

Please be at our meeting spot by 7:45 p.m. to check in. We start each tour promptly at 8 p.m.

Where should we park?

Parking is free and plentiful in DeLand. If you’re coming downtown just for our tours, we recommend parking in the old courthouse lot across the street from the Athens Theatre. The courthouse lot is on the southeast corner of Florida and Indiana Avenues.

How did you choose each stop on the tour?

Gently Haunted Tours are based on a new book by Corrine Kenner, owner of the Haunted Antique Shop. Her book, Gently Haunted: True Stories from the Haunted Antique Shop, will be published in 2022. Look for it wherever books are sold.

Are the stories true?

Yes. We’ve fact-checked and researched all of the stories you’ll hear. They’re not just urban myths and legends.

Can I take photos?

Of course! Bring your camera or cell phone, and we’ll show you where to get the best photos.

What if it rains?

All tours go on rain or shine, unless there’s a hurricane or tornado warning. Rainclouds usually pass over quickly. If there’s lightning, we’ll take cover indoors for a few minutes.

Do you offer refunds or exchanges?

No. All ticket sales are final.
